We ask all potential members to visit our training band (Stageband) on a Monday night first of all. This allows you to get a feel for the place and experience how we work together in rehearsals. If you feel ready then of course you can come and join us with your instrument and play along. However, if you prefer, you can just watch with your parents/guardian or maybe “sit in” - this means just sitting in your section and reading the music as the band play. The decision to play is totally yours. We fully understand that joining a band for the first time can be a bit scary for some. So don’t worry, you decide when you’re ready.

You might feel after your first visit that the Stageband’s level of music is “too easy”. That’s ok - the Musical Director (MD) will discuss this with you after rehearsal and assess whether you might be better placed in another ensemble. Please be aware, however, that this decision is made by the MD only and nobody else.

If you are an older student and you consider yourself to be ready for either of the older bands (Swing Orchestra or Jazz Orchestra) then we still insist that you attend all the bands in order before we decide where you will be most suited. This is because we would like you to understand our ethos of team work and how we “promote” members to other bands - it is not simply a case of age or ability but rather a mixture of those factors and, more importantly, your attitude to playing in a larger group and being a member of our community.
